ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Nursing education in Bahrain started in 1959, and over the years, the nursing department (ND) at the CHSS has evolved to become a reputable training hub in the region. In 1990, it was designated as a “World Health Organization Collaborating Center (WHOCC) for Nursing Development”, the first such centre in the Middle East. It was also selected as a member of the Executive Committee of the WHOCC network. Ever since its establishment, the CHSS has endeavoured to function as a centre of excellence in nursing education. The ND serves as an International Training Center for Basic Life Support in collaboration with American Heart Association. The ND at the CHSS currently offers a range of programs: entry into practice B.Sc. in nursing (BSN), bridging program for registered nurses (RN-BSN), and several post-RN speciality diploma programs covering Community Health, Midwifery, Psychiatric nursing, Cardiac nursing and Emergency nursing, in addition to recently offered Master degree in Adult Health Nursing program. The increasing demand for nursing services throughout the country and the region has created practice opportunities within a variety of clinical settings. Thus, the ND has contributed significantly towards Bahrainization in this key sector. In line with addressing training needs of governmental institutions in the Kingdom to upgrade health care services, the UoB has cooperated with King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) in launching the Patient Care Assistant program and Diploma Degree in Practical Nursing to cater solely for KHUH staff at an educational degree lower than the associate degree
