I am delighted to welcome you to the College of Health and Sports Sciences website at the University of Bahrain. The College of Health and Sports Sciences (CHSS) is one of the oldest colleges at the University of Bahrain and is the first and only national college that offers academic programs in the field of nursing, allied health sciences, and physical education.
Over the past four decades, the college has evolved significantly and assisted the Kingdom in achieving the Bahrainization of nursing and allied health professionals, introducing academic programs that were the first of their kind in the Gulf region. The college is distinguished by being the World Health Organization collaborating center for nursing development in the Eastern Mediterranean Region—the first and only one in the Arabian Gulf region—and an accredited center for cardiopulmonary resuscitation courses in collaboration with the American Heart Association. The joining of the Physical Education Department to the college’s departments in 2019 represents a new transformation in the college’s history and a valuable addition through offering a bachelor’s degree in physical education, preparing national cadres in physical education and sports sciences.
The college is committed to being a leader in the field of health sciences and physical education regionally and internationally, by promoting excellence in education, professional practice, and scientific research. The college strives to always be the first national college in preparing and graduating qualified cadres in the field of nursing, allied health sciences, and physical education, and to leave a positive impact and a clear imprint on the provision of healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain by promoting the principles of continuous learning and effective community partnership, while building a strong local and international reputation in the sports field, drawing its steps from the University of Bahrain’s strategic plan and Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The CHSS is the only college dedicated to health education at the University of Bahrain, offering a number of highly competent and quality academic programs in the specialties of nursing and allied health professions in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The college was established in 1976 in collaboration with the American University of Beirut under the supervision of the Ministry of Health. Initially, the college offered associate degree programs in nursing and allied health professions, and since then, over the past four decades, the college has developed its programs and capabilities to keep pace with advancement, meet the increasing demand in the healthcare sector, and contribute to the localization of health professions. The college advanced nursing and health education in Bahrain to the bachelor’s degree level. In 2011, the college was integrated with the University of Bahrain by royal decree, and in 2019, the University of Bahrain Board of Trustees decided to merge the College of Physical Education with the College of Health Sciences as an academic department; accordingly, the Physical Education Department became one of the college’s departments.
The CHSS has been offering a BSc. degree in Nursing and post-basic diplomas in the specialties of Midwifery, Community Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Emergency Nursing and Cardiac Care Nursing. In September 2015, the Allied Health programs were upgraded to the BSc. degree in Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Radiologic Technology – Diagnostic and Public Health. The Dental Hygiene program, however, continues to offer the Associate Degree. In 2018, the College managed to start Master’s degree programs in Adult Nursing and Physiotherapy.
The CHSS is located on the campus of Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) alongside the Salmaniya Hospital and the Arabian Gulf University. This location works to the advantage of the students, who spend considerable time gaining experience in various departments and clinical areas of the hospital. In addition to these training opportunities, students have access to different health centers, the Public Health Directorate and other specialized hospitals.
