ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Nursing education in Bahrain started in 1959, and over the years, the Department of Nursing at the College of health and Sport Sciences (CHSS) has evolved to become a reputable educational hub in the region. In 1976, the College of Health Sciences (CHS) offered the first academic nursing program, associate diploma programs in nursing under the administration of Ministry of Health (MoH). In 1990, the department was the first nursing educational institution in the Middle East to be designated as “World Health Organization Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) for Nursing Development”. Also, it was selected as a member of the Executive Committee of the WHOCC network. Following a cabinet decision in 2011 to merge the CHS with University of Bahrain (UoB), nursing education is now seamlessly integrated within the UoB framework which enhanced the accessibility of nursing academic programs.
Since its establishment, the Department of Nursing has endeavored to function as a center of excellence in nursing education and contributed significantly towards Bahrainization in this key sector. In line with addressing the needs of diverse healthcare organizations, the Department of Nursing is currently offering a range of nursing programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These programs aimed to qualify competent graduates in different nursing specialties who are capable to effectively meet the healthcare needs of various population in Bahrain. The curriculum of the nursing programs is adopting competency-based approaches and utilizing innovative students-centered educational strategies such as, case-based and simulation-based learning to equip the graduates with the substantial knowledge, skills, values, and attributes.
Our Faculty
The Nursing Department includes expert academic staffs with various speciality in nursing education and practice such as Advanced Practice, Critical Care, Adult Care, Midwifery and women’s and newborn health, Cardiac nursing, Emergency nursing, Psychiatric, and Community nursing. The academic staffs in the Nursing Department have extensive years of clinical experience before their work at the university in different health facilities with a range of academic degree, which provides the department with a group of competent professors in the Nursing field, facilitating the department progression for further development and improvement and being in line with the international progress in Nursing education
