SHORT COURSES LEVEL
The College of Health Sciences was designated as an American Heart Association International Training Organization in December 2001. In 2008 the title was changed to American Heart Association International Training Center. This centre provides life support courses using evidence-based practice. The courses include Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), which are offered to healthcare providers in the government and private sectors. Also, there are courses that are offered for the general public such as Heart Saver and First Aid, Heart Saver and First Aid with CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and (Automated External Defibrillator) AED. The courses are taught by a faculty team from different healthcare backgrounds such as nursing, emergency medicine and respiratory therapy.
ABOUT THE SHORT COURSES
SHORT COURSES OBJECTIVES
Basic Life Support
The objective of this course is to teach the skills of Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen); use of an automated external defibrillator (AED); and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). These are essential lifesaving skills for healthcare providers who are working in pre-hospital and in-hospital settings.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
The objective of this course is to provide the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult in cardiac arrest and pre-arrest situation.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
The objective of this course is to provide the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of a child in cardiac arrest.
Arrhythmia Interpretation for (ACLS) and (PALS) Course
The objective of this course is to provide the knowledge and skills needed to interpret cardiac arrhythmias as a prerequisite for ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) courses.
SHORT COURSES INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
a) Basic Life Support
Upon completion of the course mastery requirements, the candidate will be awarded the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) course completion Certificate which internationally recognized and is valid for two years.
b) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
Upon completion of the course mastery requirements, the candidate will be awarded American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) course completion Certificate which internationally recognized and is valid for two years.
c) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Upon completion of the course mastery requirements, the candidate will be awarded American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course completion Certificate which internationally recognized and is valid for two years.
d) Arrhythmia Interpretation for (ACLS) and (PALS) Course
Upon completion of the course mastery requirements, the candidate will be enrolled either in ACLS or PALS or both according to the area of practice.
