PROGRAM LEVEL
The postgraduate diploma in midwifery Program prepares students to become competent midwives and leaders with a clinical focus on the reproductive and primary healthcare needs of women and neonates. It is designed to prepare competent midwives in accordance with the standards established by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) to provide prenatal care, labour and delivery management, postpartum care, well-woman gynecologic care, and primary healthcare to essentially normal, healthy women and to care for normal newborns. The postgraduate diploma in Midwifery Program is based on a theoretical foundation in the health sciences of women and newborn care as well as clinical preparation which focuses on knowledge, clinical judgment, and skills that incorporate appropriate medical consultation, collaborative management, or referral. The curriculum of program is composed of 23 credit hours.

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The graduates of the program will be prepared to:
- Practice efficiently in various healthcare settings with diverse populations within a legal and ethical framework.
- Deliver advanced prenatal, intranatal, and postnatal care for healthy women and newborns and refer the high-risk conditions.
- Apply practical communication skills in collaborative roles between women, families, and communities within multidisciplinary teams.
- Adapt lifelong independent learning skills and competencies.
- Integrate evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills in decision-making.
- Contribute to the midwifery profession’s advancement through active participation in institutional and national health policy development.
PROGRAM INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
The graduates of the program will be able to:
a. Provide a safe, holistic, cost-effective, and high-quality maternity care within the ethical and legal principles in all aspects of midwifery care.
b. Construct effective communication skill with professional team members, women, family, and communities.
c. Incorporate critical thinking, reflective analytical and research skills in providing evidence-based maternity care for women and their families.
d. Engage in independent, lifelong learning and continuous professional development activities.
e. Apply comprehensive nursing process approach for women and their families within the midwifery scope of practice.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The applicants of the program must fulfill the general admission requirements for postgraduate studies at the University of Bahrain in addition to the following program specific admission requirements:
- Hold a valid nursing license from the concerned responsible health authorities.
- Minimum one year of clinical experience, while being active on duty.
- Pass the personal interview at the department level.
- Submit two recommendation letters.
DEGREE AWARDING REQUIREMENTS
- To graduate, students must fulfill the general graduation requirement stated in the postgraduate studies regulations of the University of Bahrain in addition to the following program specific graduation requirements.
- Fulfil the requirements of the consolidation of midwifery practice and complete all the required competencies international confederation of Midwives standards of Midwifery education.
