PROGRAM LEVEL

The postgraduate diploma in midwifery Program prepares students to become competent midwives and leaders with a clinical focus on the reproductive and primary healthcare needs of women and neonates. It is designed to prepare competent midwives in accordance with the standards established by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) to provide prenatal care, labour and delivery management, postpartum care, well-woman gynecologic care, and primary healthcare to essentially normal, healthy women and to care for normal newborns. The postgraduate diploma in Midwifery Program is based on a theoretical foundation in the health sciences of women and newborn care as well as clinical preparation which focuses on knowledge, clinical judgment, and skills that incorporate appropriate medical consultation, collaborative management, or referral. The curriculum of program is composed of 23 credit hours.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The graduates of the program will be prepared to:

  1. Assume advanced practice nurses’ role who lead the healthcare institutions toward quality and cost-effective patient-centered nursing care.
  2. Participate in the development of healthcare policies at institutional, national, and regional levels
  3. Pursue further postgraduate studies and continuous professional development in adult health nursing, including critical care, cardiovascular, emergency, and nephrology specialties.
  4. Design collaborative research focused on investigating contemporary healthcare issues and improving current nursing practices.
  5. Contribute to the enrichment of adult health nursing specialties by integrating evidence-based practice and clinical guidelines.

PROGRAM INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

The graduates of the program will be able to:

  1.  Integrate professional knowledge, current evidence, and clinical guidelines for guiding adult health nursing practice.
  2. Provide specialized nursing care for adult patients with various health problems utilizing the Advanced practiced nurses’ core competencies and scope of practice.
  3. Apply advanced research skills and emerging technologies in critical care, cardiovascular, emergency, and nephrology nursing specialties.
  4. Demonstrate clinical reasoning and leadership skills for achieving quality adult health nursing practice and optimal patient clinical outcomes.
  5. Employ communication and collaboration skills with patients, families, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams across various healthcare settings.
  6. Comply with the ethical principles, legal regulations, and professional nursing standards for safeguarding patients’ safety and rights.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The applicants of the program must fulfill the general admission requirements for postgraduate studies at the University of Bahrain in addition to the following program specific admission requirements:

  • Hold a valid nursing license from the concerned responsible health authorities.
  • Minimum one year of clinical experience, while being active on duty.
  • Pass the personal interview at the department level.
  • Submit two recommendation letters.

DEGREE AWARDING REQUIREMENTS

  • Pass all courses shown in the curriculum plan with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), 3.0 out of 4.0 according to University of Bahrain postgraduate policy.
  • Fulfil the requirements of the consolidation of midwifery practice and complete all the required competencies international confederation of Midwives standards of Midwifery education.
