DEAN’S MESSAGE

Dr. Leena Mohammad Abdulla Khonji

DEAN, COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND SPORT SCIENCES

I am delighted to welcome you to the College of Health and Sport Sciences website at the University of Bahrain. The College of Health and Sport Sciences (CHSS) is recognized as the oldest national institute that offers academic programs in the field of nursing, allied health sciences, and physical education. The CHSS was established in 1976 and started to offer initially an associate degree in nursing and continued to grow since its establishment in response to the needs of the country for qualified national health professionals. The CHSS was the first higher education institute in the GCC region to offer specialty programs such as midwifery, psychiatric nursing, community health nursing, cardiac care nursing, and emergency nursing, in addition to allied health specialties in the field of pharmacy, radiologic technology, medical laboratories sciences, dental hygiene, and public health. The college progress continued and moved forward to improve the educational outcomes and upgraded its all-academic programs to the bachelor’s degrees. In 2018, the college launched a master’s degree in adult health nursing and a master’s degree in physiotherapy. One of the greatest strengths of the college is the designation of the nursing department as the first WHOCC for nursing development in the Eastern Mediterranean region and its affiliation with the American Heart Society through its International Training Center. In 2019, the college experienced a new transformation by merging the physical education department with other departments of the college. The offered degree of bachelor in physical education is one of the unique programs in the Kingdom in preparing qualified educators in sports education and sciences.
Over the past four decades, the college evolved significantly and assisted the kingdom in achieving the Bahrainization of nursing, and allied health professionals. Our vision is to be highly ranked regionally and internationally as a leader in healthcare and physical education, by promoting excellence in education, professional practice, research, and community services. We aim to continue our advancement and commitment to excellence which is consistent with the University’s strategic plan and Bahrain’s economic vision 2030.
